Average speed cameras

Recommended Posts

Any pair of cameras can check your average speed between them. Assuming that the low and high speed occurs between one pair of cameras, then provided your average does not exceed the limit, then the average speed camera will not see a problem with your speed. However, you could still be caught by a separate fixed camera or checking by a mobile police unit.

Can anyone clear up a small point regarding average speed cameras.

If , for instance, you are on a 60mph road and you get stuck behind a slow moving vehicle for 10 miles going at 40mph and then you manage to pass it ;

would you be able to travel at 80mph for 10 miles without being prosecuted

by the cameras;

Only if the cameras are 20 miles apart.

They measure the average between every set of cameras.

:roll: Richard 15 tut tut. If the speed limit is 50 and you are following a slower vehicle doing 40 it doesn't alter the speed limit. Pass it safely at 50, if unsafe then wait and chill out! Worry about the things you can change/alter otherwise just go with the flow annoying as it is.

Someone else mentioned about changing lanes. That doesn't alter the speed limit either!!!

I think what some posters mean is - "How can I get away with speeding, what excuse can I give when I think it's justified?"

I personally find it easier to just stick to the limit then I can relax and not looking everywhere for police, cameras or traps!

:hihi: waiting patiently for ridicule and tut tuts :D

I always thought they just took your speed at each one and averaged it, but someone explained it to me the other day. The second (and third and so on) camera 'knows' how long it should have taken to get there from the previous one at say 50mph, if you get there in a shorter time, you must have been speeding.

What about the cameras that read your plate from behind ???

As a driver, I've never really paid attention to the way the camera is facing. There's a few cameras on my way to work (several 50mph average speed ones, a 30mph followed by two 40mph ones.

I'll probably never be fast enough on my motorbike to set them off anyway :hihi:

Some people say not all the camera's are switched on all the time.

Personally I just act like each on is one and tracking me, so don't exceed the speed limit between any two camera's.
