Thai restaurant serving Khao Soi?

This is a bit of a long shot, but has anyone seen Khao Soi on the menu in any of the Thai restaurants in Sheffield? It's a noodle soup from the north of Thailand, served with various accompaniments. I've never seen it in any Thai restaurants in the UK so I suspect it's not something you really get over here, but it'd be lovely if I could find it on a menu somewhere. I've looked at the restaurants who have menus online and haven't found it, but not all restaurants have a website so you never know!

Not a bad idea, it's worth us asking. I don't know how well-known it is though, it's been difficult to even find recipes online - we've managed to make a sort of version of it, using a combination of a Thai recipe badly translated by Google (some of the instructions are hilariously incomprehensible) and a video in Thai of someone making it, but it'd be nice to try the real thing again, if only to remind us what it's supposed to be like!

I used to go to a restaurant in Northern Thailand called 'Just Khao Soi' and that was all it served. That was it, I was hooked. Not found it anywhere here but if someone opened a place like the one mentioned, it would do very well indeed.

there's distinct sub-cuisines even in northern Thai cuisine. Khao Soi is more Lan Na food rather than Isan food, also a distinct sub-cuisine but Isan is northeast not northern Thailand and more Laos and Cambodia than Burma.

 

you are much more likely to find Isan food in Bangkok than you will Lan Na food. This is because literally millions of Isan people migrate to Bangkok to work and they bring their tastes in food with them. You are not likely to find so many northern Thai dishes on menus in restaurants outside Lan Na - even in Bangkok you have to look. And even more unlikely outside Thailand. Maybe in London there will be somewhere that specialises in northern Thai food, or Thai/Burmese fusion something like that they are so much more advanced there. Comparitively few Thai restaurants here even have sticky rice on the menu.

 

it is definitely worth asking though. Once I asked a waitress if they could make me some nám prík òrng which is like minced pork tomatoes, chili and herbs. I wrote it out in Roman script on my phone and showed her. She came back a few minutes later and said yes we have. I assume that when she asked, the chef said yes I know it. It may not be on the menu, but they obviously have the ingredients in the kitchen and can knock it up for you if they want. When it came it was nice of course but it tastes a lot better in Mae Hong Son or Mae Sariang than it does in Manchester.

 

where I find Thai restaurants come up short here is that they don't have enough different kinds of salads on the menu.

 

overall Thai food is kind of uniform and pretty disappointing anywhere outside Thailand, even in neighbouring Asian countries and even when the staff at the restaurant are all Thai.
