Gamston
First in the Times but it's on practically every UK news site now Just found this link. http://www.conservativehome.com/parliament/2016/07/the-timess-transcript-of-what-leadsom-said-in-her-interview-with-rachel-sylvester.html I agree Andrea Leadsom was wrong to say what she did. El Cid
Do childless couples have less of a stake in the future of the country than couples with kids? Nope. I cannot imagine anything more of a driver than your own children, would a childless couple understand why parents behave as they do? Perhaps the direction on the country is on a different level, would parents send their children into war, for the good of the country? Would an MP bring in a tax/policy that harmed their own family, but was for the good of the country? Perhaps our country would be taxed differently, if the rich families of our MPs were not affected. So perhaps childless MP/PMs would be better
altus
I cannot imagine anything more of a driver than your own children, would a childless couple understand why parents behave as they do? You could also ask whether a couple with children would understand issues that concern childless people (think growing old and frail without younger family members to help). The issue with Leadsom is she's shown a lack of empathy for those who are not just like her. That is not a good attribute for someone who is an MP let alone a PM. andyofborg
I cannot imagine anything more of a driver than your own children, would a childless couple understand why parents behave as they do? Really? Perhaps the direction on the country is on a different level, would parents send their children into war, for the good of the country? They may not send their own children into war but history suggests that they would have no qualms about sending other people's children into war. We are a country with a multitude of different types of families with different domestic arrangements. It is arrogant in the extreme to infer that being a parent makes you the best qualified to be an MP. Ridiculous even. It turns out any way that Leadsom the super mum has been employing an au pair. And in other news, supporters of hers have memes up on Facebook claiming that Theresa May is a supporter of Sharia law whilst Britain First have thrown their support behind Leadsom. blake
No MP is more or less qualified by their parental status than any other. rightly or wrongly, childless politicians can be perceived by some of the voters as being a bit of a sandwich short of a picnic, because they don't have children. And maybe by the elderly Tory party membership who are the ones who are going to decide who the next PM is going to be, by more than average. Michael Foot had enough problems with his electability anyway. His not having children didn't help. I wouldn't be so sure if Andrea Loathsome is all that much of an outsider. May is still favourite but make no mistake - Loathsome can win this.

Now that might be, as she suggests, down to abuse, or it could be that the pulls of Tory members have here losing by around 67% to 33%. Save your powder for a battle you can win.
