Mainstream media blocking comments

Recommended Posts

It isn't just a right, but a legal responsibility to monitor what is said.

Sheffield forum are legally responsible for what I say here. If I make libellous claims about someone, it is SF (as the publisher of my comments) that could get sued.

Heir reputation (and thusly their business and livelihood) are impacted by how I behave.

No one has total freedom of speech in this country (which is a good thing) and even if we did, it wouldn't apply to privately run forums.

Has anyone noticed this recently? Are we becoming a banana republic?? Please vote in ink not pencil

10 years ago to comment you would have had to write in to the paper (which came out in print on paper). And they probably wouldn't publish most of the rambling nonsense that came their way.

Were we a banana republic then? (Culturally insensitive term reused for link to the OP).

No, they are all at it - the Mail, Express, Sheff Star , Telegraph... FREE SPEECH is truly dead so where does that leave us sheep???

Do you even know what free speech is? Why do you imagine that it means the ability to write a comment on an article written by a private institution and published on a private website?

This isn't legally correct. They only become responsible if they have been contacted and then refuse to remove a comment.

You are responsible for your statements, not the forum.

In case you wish to argue the point

http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2013/26/section/5/enacted

(And I know that the forum operators don't believe me on this, hell, they even remove video's of people driving badly in case they get sued)

Section 5 - Operators of websites

Point 2 - It is a defence for the operator to show that it was not the operator who posted the statement on the website.

And point 12 - The defence under this section is not defeated by reason only of the fact that the operator of the website moderates the statements posted on it by others.

And more generally

Defences

2.Truth

3.Honest opinion

4.Publication on matter of public interest

Free speech does not include the ability to post comments on other peoples content. You are free to have what ever opinion you want and make it public but others have the right to refuse to publish it.

They are all blocking comments on any subject that is controversial . Its the norm these days sadly.

Its as if public forums and the media only want debate between people who share a certain view on issues like immigration .

clearly the policy is....... if you dont hold a leftie ,socialist , PC view, your opinion will not be allowed.

Now then Tony, which of the papers quoted in your post would you consider leftie or socialist and given that they aren't why would they want to block non-leftie or socialist comments on immigration?

I don't know about the Star but the other 3 are all right-wing rags that support Brexit. The reason they've stopped comments is I would guess due to the large number of right-wing nutters who will discredit the Brexit cause by posting their usual lunatic filth on their favourite sites. The Telegraph, Mail and Express and their readership couldn't be more pro-Brexit. Therefore Brexit has censored its own supporters.

WRONG unless you can point to the large amount of leftie, socialist PC propaganda in the Telegraph, Mail and Express. This is the right-wing censoring the right-wing so that it can't embarrass the right-wing.

I've seen some particularly vile comments on The Daily Mail website.
