Rub on silver or nickel plating

Recommended Posts

Some years ago I was in Bakewell Market and, after a demonstration, bought a small bottle of rub on "silver" plating.

The bottle contained a more or less colourless liquid. You could dip a duster into the liquid and rub a copper coin to give it a silvery finish. This was not paint. The finish was permanent.

I used it to restore some plating on a classic car. The finish was silver coloured and OK on brass items. It may have deposited chrome, nickel, silver. I don't know.

I'm trying to obtain more of this magic liquid. Searches of Bakewell and Chesterfield Markets have failed to locate any. I'm not a chemist, but I suspect the chemical in the liquid caused a simple chemical reaction with the brass to leave a thin layer of plating.

Does anyone have any ideas what it was or where it can be obtained?
