Is it time for Corbyn to resign.

Recommended Posts

yada yada yada......they didnt give Corbyn two weeks....and still here he is, gaining popularity i may add

That's all very well but what if he fails to unite the party and others walk out?

What good is Jeremy Corbyn in Parliament as leader of the opposition all by himself??

How so? Say all those MPs walk away from Jeremy's Labour and create a new party. Does that require them all to stand in by-elections for that new party? Against Corbyn's Labour? Well that would split the Labour vote for that seat, would it not? Letting in the Tories or another party. For the sake of argument let's call the new party the SDP2.

Or, they could abandon Jeremy and cross the floor, which doesn't require by-elections.

So JC will be all on his own. Or, based on the no confidence vote at best he might have 40 buddies. You can't have a effective opposition if there's only 40 of you, can you Banjo?

Come 2020 the Labour vote will still be split between JC's Labour, SDP2 and those 'Labour' voters sticking with UKIP.

How is that good for improving the chances of a Labour Government exactly?

The really interesting bit will come if Leadsom wins the Tory leadership. Then you will have hundreds of Tory and Labour MPs out of step with their respective leaders. A breakaway centre party could easily form from such fertile ground.

Corbyn is a nut and should go now, but he's not the only disruptive influence on UK mainstream politics. We do, indeed, live in interesting times.

A new party is a big possibility and could be a serious threat to both the Labour Party and Conservative Party with the right leadership and backing.

However, I think it is more likely Andrea Leadsom will withdraw from the Conservative leadership election than win it.

by elections only happen when the seat becomes vacant, by death or if the MP resigns.

sometimes the incumbent MP can resign and then decide to stand again, like Carswell did for UKIP in 2014. Of all the 1980s Labour defectors to the SDP, only one of them decided to resign and then stand again in a by-election as an SDP candidate. He lost.

but that is rare. Usually when MP's change their party allegiance a by-election does not follow and there is certainly no requirement for there to be one.

Well it is unlikely that Angela Eagle would win the leadership battle once the vote goes to party members, but the MPs have already voted no confidence in Corbyn. So a split now seems unavoidable, particularly as Unite seems to be offering backing to a Corbyn party and there is no shortage of backers prepared to bankroll a breakaway party with a lot of sitting MPs.

So the question is who gets to keep the CD collection? Well who gets the name? And of course which Labour Party gets the title of Her Majesty's Opposition.

I'm not sure that's true. Away from his momentum/swp acolytes then i'm not sure how popular Jeremy is.

And even then, faced with the choice of another 20 years out of power if they back corbyn or a chance of power in 4 years if they back someone else then many will back the someone else.

Corbyn may have got a big mandate but he didn't get a big mandate to be useless.

On the contrary. There had been dozens of warnings that Corbyn was out of step with the PLP, and his policies on Trident and just about everything else made him unelectable, long before the final leadership ballot. All the warnings did was bring in a swathe of £3 idiots to bolster his ballot. It might seem like recipe for guaranteed mediocrity but it's their policy for guaranteed mediocrity.

Allende would be proud.
