The consequence thread (Brexit)

Recommended Posts

Another very good reason to be outside the EU. Jaguar can build a plant in the low wage republic and sell cars freely across the EU without hinderance and there is nothing that the high wage Germans car do about it, or even try to impose tariffs on them. But that Jaguar Plant would not have free access to UK customers. Indeed the only way Mercedes could similarly sell tariff free cars in the UK would be to build a factory here.

How many jobs would disappear from Birmingham if that happened? ie the UK plant lost it's ability to trade freely in the EU?

"Jaguar Cars: 1977 to present

Taken over by Jaguar Cars, the facility transferred to Ford on their takeover, and then to Tata Motors as part of Jaguar Land Rover.

Soon after takeover, Tata Motors announced it would close either the Castle Bromwich Assembly plant or Land Rover's Lode Lane plant in Solihull. In March 2010 it was reported that Tata Motors might re-consider plant closures, but on 19 April 2010 Tata Motors announced it would go ahead and close one factory. On 15 October 2010 it was announced that an agreement had been made between Jaguar Land Rover management and union bosses to save all three Jaguar Land Rover production plants from closure. Jaguar Land Rover have agreed that all plants will remain open until at least 2020 in a deal with the Unite the Union, which represents the majority of salaried production employees. Although the deal has yet[when?] to be voted on by union members it is expected to be accepted."

Looks like the Indians have a plan.

I would think none.

If Jaguar Landrover can't trade freely in Europe then Mercedes, BMW, Audi etc can't trade freely here. So for every car sale lost to Europe, Europe would loose 2 or 3 over here.

Jaguars become more expensive in Europe. Mercedes become more expensive over here. As a consequence the Germans buy more Mercs. We buy more Jaguars.

The trick in political negotiations is for both sides to be able to take an apparent win home to their own people. Free movement is going to be the sticking point. If our guys can come home with something that can reasonably be described as UK "control" of immigration and their's can go home with something that can reasonably be described as the preservation of the principle of free movement of workers then it'll all work out fine.

If there are any Jaguar factories in the UK, as you said it is cheaper to make them overseas.
