zakes
60’s – 70’s businesses. I have been a rover, I have walked alone. Roving about is something I have always done and always enjoyed. Some of you may know I have a long memory, but as we all know, it isn’t possible to remember everything. During my meanderings in the late 60’s –early 70’s I saw lots of businesses. I recently did some reminisce-ing about that time, and recall some of these businesses and the addresses, but not all of them (addresses). I though some of you fellow forummers may know some of the businesses in the list below. See below. If any of you have worked at the companies, or if you have any anecdotes, I (we) would like to read them. Please try to refrain from Googling, and reaching from your Kelly’s books and other guests. If you wish, you can (could) see this as a quiz. All Sheffield addresses. Harrison – (office supplies) co. hillsbro
E. Marsden & Son - the best metal fabricators in town. Ernest Marsden was a sheet metal worker who borrowed £30 in 1928 and set up in business, working from home in Burnaby Street. He worked hard, took enormous risks and built up the business from nothing, moving to Herries Road in the 1940s. He "retired" in the 1960s but couldn't just stop working, so he bought a farm at High Bradfield! After a few years he moved to Torquay and lived to the ripe old age of 95. As they say, "hard work never did anybody any harm".

handypandy
As a teenager in the 60's my dad's friendly, back street barber told me that as my hair was so thick, I would never get away without using a dollop of brylcreem. Fashions were changing and I wanted out. My mate had his hair styled and I asked him where. Off I went to Roger Sherwoods on Arundel Gate for a £1. 10s cut and blow.... and never looked back:) Looking on 'Relative Worth' that now equates to about twenty five quid ....it was worth every penny at the time but £25 for a haircut on todays thinning mop would break my heart. Last time I was in Bakewell, I noticed a Roger Sherwoods there. My gran used to go to his mother's salon at Southey Green. .
