Turns out that he was considered for deportation but there are no flights to that particular country and they are considered a dangerous state which we wouldn't deport anyone to anyhow, so that won't be the end of Charles Clarke and the story is a red herring.

If someone has trangressed in relation to our laws or potentially poses a threat to our security then we should return that person to their country of origin notwithstanding how "dangerous" it might be. Such a policy might lead other individuals to ponder about this possible consequence if they are minded to behave in a similar manner.

My understanding is that other countries are assesed for their human rights and people are not repatriated to countries where to do so would put their life at risk. There are many countries which people dissappear if they are returned for their body to be found later. This is totally unacceptible, and to send someone back to a place where they might be killed or tortured by the state or other organisation would be wrong.

So what about the ones who have been released by accident or negligence and re-offended?

Better not to let 'em in the first place.
