Police CID building Dixon Lane?

I came across a photo today of an old police building and wondered where it was. I noticed the Duncan Gilmore (wine & spirit merchants) building next door and research suggests they had premises on Dixon Lane from 1860. The sign above the entrance says City of Sheffield Police, CID.

Can anyone confirm if this is on Dixon Lane and when it was built & demolished please?

I do not think it is Dixon lane but it could be Water lane.I think the Duncan Gilmore building was a bonded warehouse at one time.http://www.picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;v00955&pos=27&action=zoom&id=42336

I think that was at Attercliffe.[/QUO

Mr.T. is right. It was Central C.I.D. at Water Lane in 1963. The Chief Constable had to resign over that episode and at least two detectives were fired. Worse and more serious things have happened in local law enforcement since. However then (1963) it was Sheffield Constabulary, later Sheffield and Rotherham Constabulary (1968 I think) and then South Yorkshire Police.

From National Archives...

The history of the Sheffield police force can be said to date from 1818 when, after considerable debate, an Improvement Act was passed which transferred the lighting, watching and cleansing of Sheffield from the Town Trustees to a body of Commissioners. Colonel Fenton was appointed as first superintendent of the police and on his death in 1835 he was succeeded by Thomas Raynor. In 1836 the first day policemen were appointed.

On 4 April 1844 responsibility for the police force was transferred from the Improvement Commissioners to Sheffield Town Council, under the supervision of the Watch Committee, and in June that year the area covered was extended outwards from the centre of the town. At first the force was housed in the Town Hall and it was not until 1864-1865 that a police station was built in Castle Green. The force grew steadily. By 1900 there were eight police stations in addition to the central station and by 1921 this number had risen to thirteen.

In 1967 Sheffield and Rotherham Joint Force was formed and in 1974 South Yorkshire Police Force was set up.

The minutes of the Watch Committee are available from 1867 onwards

No need to be Mr.K. Surely 'Shenanigans' perhaps happened at Whitworth Lane too !

Yes but "Watter' Lane was the one you did not want to be a visitor at, the steps down to the cells were not very stable, and one could stumble quite easily from top to bottom if one was not careful LOL;)
