Corbyn lost my respect with his response to the referendum result: the way he laid into Cameron about it was just uncalled for; it's not as if it was his fault or that the vote was in any way directed personally against him...

by saying we should obey the will of the people?

May will not reveal her tax returns because there is no history of this.

Just like there was no history of not smoking in public places, letting women vote or keeping left on the roads . . . before it happened. Why, oh why, do the conservatives rarely embrace new ideas. They think that a position is justified by the mere fact that it hasn't been done before.

I guess the clue is in the name!

The rest of us have to drag them kicking and screaming into the modern world.

Sorry rant over - back on topic next time, promise.

For the reasons stated, give or take a heavy dose of sarcasm.

There is also a significant possibility that "the people" do actually understand the function of an advisory referendum in a representative democracy and voted accordingly. This "will of the people" is a mindless Tory mantra that they're using as an excuse to do just exactly as they want to.

Go on then: how do you suggest we do that?

I respect any MP that refuses to reveal their tax returns. That whole thing has gone away from being a genuine attempt to bring transparency into politics and is now just about puerile nosiness by the public and bullying by journalists.

We usually don't do it.

It becomes starkly obvious that the new idea is actually the truth or the best way forward like:-

1. The world is flat

2. The human race evolved from apes (still not accepted by the whole world)

3. Women are equal to men (still not accepted by the whole world)

4. The NHS

5. Everyone needs to drive motor vehicles in the same direction on the same side of the road. * This may have happened before motor vehicles.

6. Smoking in public enclosed spaces adversely affects everyone.

7. Slavery is wrong (still not accepted by the whole world)

8. Hanging is wrong (still not accepted by a large number)

Sometimes the reactionaries are in the minority and laws are passed to impose the new thinking on them (thats called democracy btw) like:-

See 2. 3. 7. 8. above

In many of the above the reactionaries then claim they can run the new ideas better than the people or party that introduced them. This may be (frighteningly) true . . . . . some of the time.

........more on the rant, only because I was asked.
