Tories to bring back Grammar schools

Recommended Posts

Well, that clearly goes against what I said all along about grammar schools being a good idea on paper but only if they aren't at the expense of those not academically gifted enough to pass the entrance exam.

But some, Justin Smith being one, are quick to want the idea crushed before its fully developed. Because it's a Tory idea and they hate the Tories.

Zzzzzzzzzzz.

No I want the idea crushed because it`s an appalling idea which offends my ideals, and, as it happens, might negatively affect my kids education. I`m not stupid enough to think my kid will definitely pass the 11+.

And, for your information, I`m not even a socialist, certainly not a left wing one. I`m probably a Blairite / Lib Dem ish.

I don`t hate Tories, I don`t hate anyone as it happens, though, it has to be admitted, I don`t particularly like right wing Tories.

I dont think having a grammar school in a area of large populace will be too detrimental; but I think selection excludes pupils from certain schools and is negative.

As I`ve said previously, once one Grammar opens in an area there will be pressure on other schools to follow suit, because, by definition, if they don`t they`ll end up as Secondary Moderns.

Rubbish. Grammar schools select on ability, not social status. It is by definition meritocratic. An opportunity which is earned.

They are a force for social mobility and a means to diminish the advantage that the children of the wealth have over their peers.

So why is the %age on free school meals of kids in Grammar schools so far below that in non selective schools ?

But you will be amused if Tory voters' houses lose value?

And you assume those of us in favour of grammars are all happy to label children not accepted into grammars as failures?

Am I right or is that not what you have written?

Please provide proof of this so we can examine the veracity of the claim and provide an explanation if one is due.

1st : Where have I said that anyone is happy to label kids who fail the 11+ as failures ? But the fact is that what they were, and would be, perceived as. Most importantly, it`s what the kids would feel. Are you denying that ?

2md : Which claim are you asking me to verify ?

1) yes, I'm denying that in those terms.

2) the one about school dinners.

Assuming that's true:

Because smart people are more likely to make a good living and smart people are more likely to have smart kids.

But it's only likelihood. It's very possible, and common for smart kids to be born to no-so-smart parents. Or for smart parents to have had some bad luck or made some bad choices and not make a good living.

Selecting based on ability is, by definition, meritocratic. I don't know why this is such a difficult concept for so many. It's insanely obvious.

Yes, he is. In discussion previously, we identified the Communist Party of Britain would be the best party for him to join, and he agreed it probably was.

It seems clear that anyone who argues for fairness, justice or equality here on sheffieldforum are at risk of being pigeon-holed.

I'm not a communist, but I am a tax-payer, and I would like to see the tax system properly enforced so that the rich and powerful cannot simply choose not to pay. And I am clear in my view that revenue should be utilised according to needs of all rather than to bolster the advantage of the few.

.

2) the one about school dinners.

It was on the BBC news last night, I can`t find the exact figures off that, and I'm short of time at the moment, I`m sure they`ll come to light. But in the, meantime here is a report on the top 200 comps v Grammars (I`d have thought the figures would be rather worse if they were for all comps and Grammars) :

Percentage on Free School Meals

Comprehensives = 6%

Grammars = 2.1%
