Remembering Studio 7 in the Wicker!

Recommended Posts

Great recollection samssong. but (as a Pitsmoor bloke) the pubs that were actually in the Wicker, that were on the 'Studio 7' side, were the 'Brown Cow' and the 'Bull and Oak'. the other side was 'White Lion','Viaduct' and the 'Station Hotel' and the only one left in the Wicker, the 'Big Gun'. The 'Hole in the Wall' (Wicker Brewery) was few yards into the beginning of Saville Street just beyond the arches .Thank you sammsong !

Yes thats right, mind you a few yards other way towards Market was the Bull and Mouth and that one ont end of Nursery Street ( forgotten its name but it was a scruffy oil):hihi:

The one at the end of Nursery Street was 'The Lion Hotel' and of course diagonally across from the 'Bull and Mouth' (Waingate/ Castlegate) was the 'Lady's Bridge' from which name was taken from the river crossing and not, I presume.from the female clientel.

When I was around 16 years old my favourite film star was Briggite Bardott and she was showing at the Wicker in a film called The Night Heaven Fell.

I sneaked of the Castle Market building site where I was an apprentice bricklayer walked on the Wicker and sneaked into the afternoon performance all excited about seeing Briggite in the flesh so to speak.

The film started and I sat bang in the middle near the back of the auditorium ,imagine my surprise when in a almost empty cinema a bloke in a rain coat came in and sat bang next to me.

The film was hotting up with Briggite being Briggite when this bloke put his hand on my knee and then my thigh .

I jumped up as though I had just been electrocuted and in my best building site language told this pervo to go away and smacked him in the gob.

He ran out and the one or two other members of that afternoons audience told me I had done a good job on pervo.

I did not visit the Wicker again until Crocodile Dundee was showing to record audiences but this time I made sure I was with my wife and Susan from next door , I sat in the middle of the two just to make sure.

..........three memories I have of the "Wicker Picture Palace"........one was the same experience as yours, the "pervo" in the raincoat, think he was well known!

The second was the 3d film ..."The House of Wax" which as I remember involved a character in a black hat and cape causing mayhem from time to time. One night as a promotion, the manager of the Wicker, dressed up in similar attire just before the "interval" and raced around the cinema frightening the female punters to death!......unfortunately on his second circuit someone stuck their foot out in the stalls and the said manager went ar*e over t1t and blacked both eyes!

The third incident I remember was a film about "Jack the Ripper". As the "Lyonsmaid" lady sidled down to the front just before the interval,a voice from the back shouted......"Mary Clark are you Mary Clark!......to which she replied "No am Not" yer cheeky get!
