Should late bars and clubs close early?

Recommended Posts

The longer opening hours arent about enabling people to drink for longer, people work lots of different shifts/hours now, the longer opening hours mean people doing for example a 2-10 could still go for a few drinks.

I get that point but do we need bars to open as long as 6am ?

It was about evening out the binge drinking so people didnt do the last order rush and you didnt have hundreds/ thousands on the street at the same time. Short memory if you cnat remember the chaos at chucking out time.

So the result seems to be that violent crime and alsohol related violent crime has fallen by 53% in the last ten years. It was falling anyway because people drink less. later hours have not caused an increase in such crime. Its probably smoothed out the time of any trouble more evenly rather than focusing on certain hours.

Figures can be made made up plus not all crimes are reported .

How will this prove that it's worse than it was in the past?

You'll notice that on a Friday (for example) many people work, and then want dinner. So the drinking and socialising can't start until something like 1900.

And this was my point about why an anecdote or series of anecdotes is a very poor basis for an argument.

The real facts show the complete opposite to what the OP suggested.

If there's demand, yes. Why should there be an arbitrarily set time things should close? We live in a 24 hour society now.

The problem isn't the venue. It isn't there opening hours. Its the behavior of people using them that's the problem.

Nobody claimed that. This is the kind of response I've come to expect when you point out that someone's argument lacks any real evidence to support it.

Facetious, question statistics and fall back to a different question "do we need". Just accept that a few anecdotes are not at all representative or evidence.

Really? Anecdotes help build up the background to the issue , evidence theirs plenty to be had weather from personal experience or official sources, facetious , a man has died in tragic way plus there has been others I would hardly call that ' facetious , So now on this forum we must treat each thread as a trail?

Except you need to be able to identify which is genuine research and what was made up by a DN journalist.

Fairly confident you didnt even look at the data, but just dimsissed it.

Police crime figures are always problematic, but staitsicians and researchers who are trained and do the job for a living make allowances for unreported crimes. This is all part of studying statitsics as well as criminology. Have you studied either?

Serious crimes such as murder are reported in 99.99% of cases.

As violent crime is falling in general and there is no indicatiing there has been any rise in crime due to the Licencing Act 2003, then am not seeing any case or any evidence provided by you. Very few pubs stay open till early hours because its not profitable.

Anecdotes are the weakest form of very questionable evidence as they lack any consistency or verification. Its popular on Sheffield forum to use anecdotal evidence as truth when in fact it is very weak and unreliable due to its limited perspective and lack of objectivity.

If you are going to make statements and claims then you should be able to back it up with logic , reason and evidence.

Anecdotes are basically useless in trying to prove a point. They aren't data, they aren't information and they most definitely don't prove a pattern.
