clogginchris
Great post by Paula. I live in the City Centre and work with the Residents Action Group. One of our members works with vulnerable people, and gives exactly the same advice. Don't give the beggars money, most of them are not homeless, and some are actually being pimped. i.e.. A Gangmaster for want of a better word, collects their takings at the end of the day and gives them back a percentage. Give to charities and organisations which help vulnerable people. And please try and educate students, it's the reason so many beggars are around the universities. This is a good page to go to for advice on how to help http://www.helpushelp.uk
Ms Macbeth
Really helpful information in the link Chris. I'm pleased to see all the organisations and agencies seem to be working together.
pattricia
A beggar sits outside Aldi right at the side of the shopping trolleys. He is waiting for the pound coin from the trolley when it is taken back. !

Minimo
There's an oldish lady sits outside Tesco on Spital Hill. I've never seen her actively begging, nor have I seen anyone approach her. She just sits there, very sad.
property4u
There is someone outside the big Tesco on Savile Street. Why would smeone sit there on a busy (with vehicles), if they are homeless, why be there? Beggars should be removed from the streets, as it is an illegal activity. The authorities clearly need to do more, and if they need the financing, it needs be found.
Dicko1973
I am a worker in Sheffield City centre, iam sick to death of being approached every dinner time by this people asking if I've got any spare change, these people are always drunk or high on drugs, I find this very intimidating. Sheffield is not a good place to visit.

Sheffield is not a good place to visit. I also work in the centre at the foot of the moor and workers there are fed up with it many of those asking for money are clearly drunk or on drugs and it is particularly intimidating for female/young members of staff to be harassed for money as they walk to the bus stop at night. redruby
I wish more people understood that giving them money is not helping. I dont go to work all day to make 'spare change' to hand over to people with drug/alcohol issues to go straight into the hands of dealers. They are not just in the city centre now and it's difficult to avoid them. These people need qualified help to help them with their issues so please donate to a homeless charity if you want to help. WarPig
I also work in the centre at the foot of the moor and workers there are fed up with it many of those asking for money are clearly drunk or on drugs and it is particularly intimidating for female/young members of staff to be harassed for money as they walk to the bus stop at night. I've seen the police try to deal with them and get a load of verbal abuse from the 'do good' public for doing so, and demanding that they leave them alone. It a no win situation. Opinions are so divided.
