Beggars, homeless, street drinkers & drug users in Sheffield!

Recommended Posts

The council could get a batch of cheap tents and place them in a dedicated site such as the old Castle Market site, behind fencing and use it for the very few genuine homeless people to camp. The come down extra hard on street beggars, no blind eyes turned, maximum prosecution. Local businesses benefit from a less anti social environment and thus pay more tax to the council and these scrounging beggars learn the consequences of their actions.

The problem is that the ‘very few’ genuine homeless tend to those that don’t want to engage with help because that means dealing with their addiction.  They wouldn’t be able to just hide away on the old market site etc because they need to beg and steal to feed their addiction.  This would only work if those people were required to engage with dealing with their addiction.  Just prosecuting them won’t work.

That would probably fall on charities such as Gamblers Annonymous to reach out to them. Giving them money on the street in an unregulated way just feeds their addiction and makes the problem worse.

If they don't want help, that is up to them, there are places out there that provide help. But why should vulnerable members of the public give up their hard earned money to support their addiction?

If Anna wants to be so gullible, so be it.

But giving to them once encourages them to beg from the next person in the street and so on, often aggressively. If we all stood together and made it a hostile environment for beggars, we could help to nip it in the bud.
