Why do the police need more power to deal with thieves? Aren't they supposed to stop crime?
Popular Post birobasher Posted Thursday at 20:41 Popular Post Share Posted Thursday at 20:41 All this 'he's got a smartphone' business sounds like the common rant about unemployed people having 'flat screen televisions', as if they bought them when they were destitute. Homelessness is only a couple of months' rent away for anyone, including you. When you end up on the street, you may have possessions from your life before - i.e. a phone. By the way, the modifier 'smart' isn't necessary, just like 'flat screen', because that's what the vast majority are. It's not a luxury to own a mobile anymore, it's a necessity. You have to have access to the internet to deal with the DWP for one thing. The same goes for pets - what are these people supposed to do with their dog when they become homeless? Abandon them? Living rough is harder than you can possibly imagine, and an animal companion may be the only comfort these people have. There are other 'comforts' of course, which don't actually do any good, but they can seem very attractive when you are continuously cold, wet hungry and routinely being verbally and physically attacked by passers-by. Anything to dull the pain. Being homeless, begging for money and having substance misuse problems are things that overlap, but they don't automatically come as a package. It may ease your conscience to stereotype every street sleeper as a cynical beggar, junkie and/or criminal, but deep down you know it's not the case. 8

GoldenAleLad Posted Friday at 15:30 Share Posted Friday at 15:30 I was in town only yesterday and I was appalled by the amount of beggars , mainly drug users and maybe some dealers that there are there now ... most especially on the Moor, Fargate and High St. Why can't this Labour Council get tough with these people ? Ordinary people are scared to go in the new Leah Yard and Cambridge Food collective because of them and they are quite intimidating ! 1
