tzijlstra
It is the centrepoint of the nation and it has a big, useless building that can be converted quite easily. I for one am pleased he is sticking his neck out for the city.
crookedspire
I actually think it would do our friends in power a world of good to come up north instead of hiding away down London. The old Town Hall could be repaired and used Sheffield gets a landmark restored and they housed in appropriate surroundings. Never happen though. Annie Bynnol
Why not? As has been said moving away from the South East might give the MPs a different perspective. Some MPs and influential civil servants have "lived" in the Palace of Westminster for so long that their decision making has become tainted by institutionalism and is risk averse and unrepresentitive. The removal of Parliament from the City of Westminster should be a long term goal of British democracy.
dutch
Put parliament in hope valley. Its no real democracy anyway. Every time someone different shows up they use all their guns to get rid of them as nastily as legally possible.
hicksy3
Why not? Apart from awful road and rail connections to the North West, it's pretty well connected to the rest of the country. Whilst there's plenty of underused buildings, I'm not sure how fast anything could be brought up to spec, or if anywhere else has a more readily usable building. I suspect the demos that accompanied the Libdem conference when Clegg had the idea of moving that to Sheffield will ensure that no party conferences or meetings of the uk parliament ever come to Sheffield in the future. alchresearch
Other cities have also been mooted: Should parliament head north to Manchester while the builders are in? https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/the-northerner/2015/jun/26/parliament-manchester-mps-peers-westminster-northern-city
spilldig
It won't happen. We will still be classed as the republic of South Yorkshire as far as Westminster is concerned.
WestTinsley
I think it's a great idea .. and might hasten the plan of devolving govt powers to the North etc.. make it permanent I say
