The Consequences of Brexit (part 2)

Recommended Posts

After the UK leaves the EU there will still be immigration, but the UK will have more control on the numbers, because there will no longer be free movement. We had the second referendum this year, because the first referendum was in 1975. I agree democracy will be the winner, only if the Government follows the instructions of the voters and the UK exits the EU completely.

All the parties support immigration, the Tories target will still be 100,000, but it will not happen for some years to come.

The Government needs to reduce immigration from non EU countries. I think the Chinese made up the biggest numbers last year.

I think the numbers are too high because of people joining members of families already living here. The Government needs to change the rules to reduce the numbers.

London Road, Highfield is the centre of the Sheffield Chinese community. The Sheffield Chinese community is pressing for the street to be formally labelled Sheffield's Chinatown. The Chinese community in Sheffield is also spreading toward the city centre, with a notable number of Chinese people, greatly influenced by the city's university, which has the largest number of Chinese in the country.

but what if we have another referendum which comes out with a different answer?

isn't that democratic?

We have just had another referendum, which was 41 years after the first one and a different answer was given. The Government at the time followed the instructions given as a consequence of the first one, so rightly the current Government intends to follow the instructions of the recent EU referendum, which is how democracy works.

no one is disputing that, but if we were to have another referendum and that came to a different answer then would that be democratic too?

But in the first one, the implicatopns of the ifrst one were well thought out and planned.

In the second one the ego of Cameron (who thought it would never happen) didn't make any contingencies for it.

That's what the Irish did - another one 6 months later... which reversed the opinion.

None of all know what will happen in the future and how successful the UK will be, once we have left the EU. Given time and if the EU still exists, then perhaps in the future there may be justification for the UK to have a referendum to decide if the UK should apply to re-join the EU again.
