taxman
To be fair it looked liked the last act of some old cold war bankrupt nation. Chugging out big black flumes of coal is hardly an indication of state of the art warships. But there again, why shouldn't they take the short way round to Syria? Saves money and fuel. I think they are gas fired boilers and steam turbines on the Kuznetsov.
Obelix
I think they are gas fired boilers and steam turbines on the Kuznetsov. IT's fuel oil - they were invovlewd in a large oil spill a few years back near Ireland as I recall when they were replenishing.
Bob Arctor
IT's fuel oil - they were invovlewd in a large oil spill a few years back near Ireland as I recall when they were replenishing. It was embarrassing, it looked like they were burning coal. Putin to Rear Admiral: Has tha got t'coil in?
dangerousedd
an aircraft carrier is handy to have off Syria for the Russians even if it is a bit old.
zoco
I had a mondeo turbo that used to do that, perhaps their turbos are knackered as well. I think that you'd find that your Mondeo engine was technologically superior to the engines on their flat-top Kuznetsov A couple of phrases that apparently have no equivalent in the Russian language are 'state of the art' and 'technical innovation', their military output of hardware has nearly always been based on sheer weight of numbers and a product that is effective without being remarkable. In WW2 the best, most technically advanced tank was the German Tiger but without a doubt the most successful was the Russian T-34, cheap to produce, in large numbers it got the job done. The same can be said for the AK-47 when you compare it to assault rifles we and the Americans have produced over the years which have been technological marvels but expensive to produce and can be problematic under certain conditions. One other phrase that I don't think has an equivalent in Russian, given the proliferation of gold lame speedo trunks and other hideous male and female swimwear displayed on a beach whilst on holiday a few years ago, is 'sartorial elegance'! Mossway
Looks like the Navy have got both HMS Duncan and HMS Dragon shadowing this carrier. The fishheads are doing well if they can get two Type 45s serviceable at the same time. Edited October 23, 2016 by Mossway sp
The Joker
Three impressive Russian warships have sailed close by our shore's I wounded if anyone waved to them as went on their way? Darn it. Do you think Vlad could hold off until 2018? We might be able to escort him down the channel with a couple of F-35B JSFs.
999tigger
The warships are heading to Syria an chance to show off. No not an new tactic but Putin likes to keep the West guessing and the occasional airplane or warship guest appearances do the trick. Well Putin has to put on an good show . Are people going to be impressed? Doubt it. It just is the normal Russian powerplay. Nt sure why he has to put on a good show. It is all entirely predictable.
