Interestingly the Golf/A3 platform is also used for Seat Leon and Skoda Octavia - might be worth having a look at those as they generally don't have that high a used car value. The Seat Exeo is particularly interesting - it is basically an Audi A4 previous gen that can be picked up for a lot less money than the original. It's had a couple of niggling faults (on the level of screen washers getting blocked) but drives well. When we were shopping for cars we also looked at Golfs and A3s but plumped for this one, I thought the Golf felt cramped and the A3 felt flimsy.
