Favourite car make and models !

Best I've ever been in was an Audi A8 with the Lambo engine. That was immense. The guy sold it after a year to get a brand new S Class. Lost tonnes of money on it.

BMW - nothing else has the poise and ability on the road, and nothing in "mainstream" driving comes as close for sheer driving enjoyment. I'd have more fun and interest in a TVR or Elise, but they wouldn't be quite as practical. Reliable as anything, easy to maintain and cheap to service.

Land Rover Discovery - goes anywhere more or less, does anything. Needs constant fettling with a large spanner/hammer and you end up buying a welder in short order.... and if you don't know how to fix it you will learn. Probably by some mountain track in the Carpathians. Or on a dry eyot in the middle of a river crossing.

It's easy to fix, I've rebuilt steering swivels near Duga 3 on a forest track, and rebuilt injector pumps in the Gobi desert.. they are cars with a certain... character.

Or sheer bloodymindedness... Im not quite sure.

I want a Defender next. Or a SWB G Wagon.

What's the stat about Landies? Something daft like 60% of them are still on the road?

I have always had Fords,i currently have a focus.Always great to drive and reliable. My favourite ford was a modified mk 2 escort i owned back in the eighties with all the RS accessories and tuning parts fitted to it.That was a great car, i often wonder if it still survives.

You can find out if it is taxed and MOTed from the DVLA website by typing in the Reg. No.

My 1989 Golf Mk2 16V Gti is going strong 16 years after I sold it.

For Series Landrovers (ie not Defenders or Discos) LR reckon that 70% of them are still in use in one form or another. The vast majority of production of course went overseas to tropical countries which simply don't have the corrosion or salt issues we do which probably helps.

Mazda MX-5 1.8i, mk1.

18 years young in February this year, ours as its 2nd owners for 16 years, 84kmiles (70 by us).

One of the last 400 mk1s ever made, originally a UK car sold new to its 1st lady doctor owner by Hayselden in Donny (when they were still Mazda main dealers, before turning to Skoda).

And in that time it's been: our only car and commuter (as DINKYs), my commuter, long-term dry stored (2 years), on Irish plates, on French plates, back on UK plates, my commuter again, and eventually retired to sunny weekends and the odd summer commute. And all over Western Europe throughout.

And in that time, it's wanted: oil, filters, 1 or 2 sets of plugs, 1 or 2 sets of pads, tyres, 1 full change of all belts including cambelt (after the 2 years dry storing...I paid for the local main dealer in France to come fetch it with a flatbed, didn't dare crank it), a new roof with heated glass rear (one and only mod, didn't really need it), the sills done.

And that's it. Everything else is 18 year-old factory-fitted spec. Exhaust, discs, clutch, interior, <etc.> We'll get buried in it, I reckon :D

Make-wise, I'll go Mercedes.

Our first has proven to be as much of a jewel as the MX-5 above, I just can't bring myself to change it after 4 years (44kmiles, on 73kmiles current) or so, even though the plan was to keep it just a year or two to get a taste of the brand on the cheap (never had one before) and it's really aged by contemporary looks standards (one of the last-made W203, 07 plate).

Or perhaps they put something in the water manufacturing process for end-of-production/last-of-series cars ;)

Had all sorts in 26 years of driving here and abroad, and "usually unusual" (I can't seem to do small & quiet econoboxes: I've had mostly Subarus, besides 'hot' small and not-so-small hatches (Pug 205 GTI, Lancia Delta HF integrale, Mini Cooper S) and old luxobarges (BMW 7 E23, Citroën CX GTI turbo and BX 16v) plus the odd Hi-Lux (RN85)) but these 2 stand out.

Never been one for SUVs and SUV-sized 4WDers, but the Macan is starting to really appeal to me for some weird reason. Can't afford even the 1st wheel of it like, but...

On Hondas - brilliant cars. The Jazz isn't wonderful for commutes but a great affordable family car that is very flexible, I wish they'd continue the Accord here as it is a great alternative to the big saloon/estate class.

New Civic looks awesome as well in my opinion.

I started out with MGBs, owning around a dozen. Then I got into BMWs including various saloons and estates, a couple of convertibles and three M635 CSis. I also had a Cavalier SRi, Toyota Corolla GT and MR2 plus an Austin Healey 100/6. I now favour VAG cars, with an A6 Avant, a TT roadster and a 1984 Golf GTI.
