Central library closure

Recommended Posts

Sheffield is till a decent place to live- but lets face it, it could do with picking its act up in many ways!

The 'go and move to leeds/manchester' argument is daft - most people live here because they prefer it, which is why they don't want to see it slip and know it can do better as a City.

Sheffield seriously lacks in terms of arts and culture compared to other cities, and has a truly abysmal council that seem intent on dragging the city down, but those are things that (hopefully) will change......

Agree with all of this. But would add that Sheffield may be a bit lacking in mainstream culture, but it has the most amazingly quirky sub-culture that I've not come across in any other place.

This council is really full of amateurs , isn't it ?

Amateurs would do a better job.

This lot have delusions of grandeur and are full of their own self-importance. They also find it impossible to listen to those who put them in power, and will never ever admit they might have got it wrong..

Why?

Do you think there's pots of cash out there just waiting for councils to claim? Do you think other developers are queuing up to refurbish the library building? Or do you think it's alright as it is?

If they had not tried to pursue a deal with the Chinese they would be slated for ignoring the possible opportunity. Just as they have been for pursuing such an opportunity.

Should they have tried to make a deal in secret? Then get slated when it leaked, much like the library building pipework.

Trouble with Sheffield council they waste money on fancy pantsy glory schemes. ... World Student Games anyone? ... to the expense of the nitty gritty base services we want and need. They give out stupid contracts ... tree fiasco! ... and generally seem incapable of organising you know what in a brewery!

Why ? When they come on the news trumpeting a £ billion deal with investors ,when nothing has been signed ,nothing has been planned but they want all the plaudits for such a brilliant deal . By the way its 1 year on from the great announcement and not one thing is even in the planning stage

Looking at the statements made by the councils representatives at the time, they agreef a 12 month period to allow the Chinese investors to look at the feasibility of redeveloping the library, whilst the council looked at other library locations.

The Chinese have decided it's not viable, the council have looked at and either rejected other sites or they were not available.

Time for a rethink, but the library building in its current form is unfit for purpose for all users, and isn't a particularly good art space either.

As far as we know, no other opportunities were on the table at the time. The council have no funds to do the work themselves. It may be that Museums Sheffield become involved, in which case access to other funding streams is a possibility for redevelopment.

All that being said, what would you have done differently?
