tinfoilhat
If implementing the checks costs more that it saves, no. Thats a fair point, I never thought of that. It could be Tax Discs all over again.
El Cid
If implementing the checks costs more that it saves, no. Would a person get non-emergency medical treatment with al the medical history. Identity should be done way before they reach the hospital. I agree with the principle, if they dont pay UK taxes, no automatic free NHS.

Identity should be done way before they reach the hospital. I agree with the principle, if they dont pay UK taxes, no automatic free NHS. The principle might be a good one - it's putting it into practice that's the problem. To have a robust identity checking system then everyone will have to be checked. Imagine how many missed appointments there's going to be because some people forget their id.
swede1973
Why cant we insist on tourists having health insurance when visiting the UK.
altus
Other countries seem to make it work, you either have to be waving medical insurance or a credit card or both Other countries have insurance based schemes so check id as a matter of course. We don't currently check id and doing so will be an additional cost for the NHS. If checking everybody's id costs more that it saves there will be less money to treat patients. Blackbeard
One of the first things the coalition did when they took power in 2010 was to scrap plans for ID cards. Not everyone carries a form of ID, it was only a few years ago I exchanged my paper driving licence for one with a picture.
