GOLDEN OLDIE
Can anyone remember this contest from, I think, the 60s? which was held in pubs like The Wharncliffe at Firth Park. TORONTONY
Can anyone remember this contest from, I think, the 60s? which was held in pubs like The Wharncliffe at Firth Park. It seemed to be a bit controversial. I'm not sure why? 1963 was the year and it was called the Mackeson beat group contest. I don't know of any controversy however. I believe Johnny and the Cadillacs won it over 4 other bands, and I know for a fact that an old mate of mine was the singer with Ray Vern and the Chequers, who were one of the also rans. I believe the Cherokees and the Kenny Pete 4 were also there. It got nationwide coverage in the NME. I also think they had to use their own material and that the overall quality was very good.
