Trees on Western Road are next

Recommended Posts

Although these trees are a memorial if they are damaging the pavement then remove and replace, the trees can still be a memorial.

As you go up the road it is Tarmac but further up there are flags which are more dangerous as I've had relatives who has fallen due to raised roots/Tarmac.

Just as an aside...

Where the existing pavement is made up of flagstones, have there been any cases where these have been retained during streets ahead work, or do they automatically replace them with tarmac in all cases?

Edit. And another thought...

Do we still have any cobbled streets in Sheffield? If we do, how does Streets Ahead deal with them?

The road, pavements, kerbs can be sorted out without cutting down healthy trees :loopy:

Yes but the reason they are cutting them down is that it will be cheaper for Amey to maintain the pavements with smaller trees. I.e. it's a decision solely in Amey's financial interest. Local residents and former war veterans don't come into it. That's what privatisation does, we should resist it.

Its not solely for their benefit. What's the point in repairing the kerbs, paths and roads to then plant a tree that will cause the same damage again at some point?

By the time that happens their contract will be over. They will just maximise the value of this contract while they can.

It's a scandal than runs deeper than tree roots!

You seem to be contradicting yourself somewhat there. Are you saying they should plant trees that will grow to a huge size?

They want to remove mature trees which over the period of their contract will cost them lots of money.

They will replace these with small trees which will cost them a lot less to maintain.

By the time those small trees have become big trees, it will be someone elses problem.

Good summary. Thanks!

One of the declared aims of the strategy is to reduce maintenance costs.
