Time to face up to the truth of religion?

Recommended Posts

The thing to remember when it comes to belief, knowledge and so-called truth is that it all exists in our heads. It is the product of perception.

There is no denying that perception varies enormously, and is coloured by previous experience, anticipation, imagination and the will.

The truths of the world, and the universe, are expressable in many different ways. If you want to build a radio-telescope, then poetry isn't going to be much use to you. Likewise, if you strike an insight into the human condition, tryingto explain it in algebra or feynman diagrams won't ensure your enlightenment is passed down the centuries.

Coinsider religion as a type of poetry or art, rather than some kind of rigid mechanistic belief in (a) supernatural being(s). That's almost the least important part of the whole thing.

Truth is when your words accurately match physical reality. Any other definition is flat out nonsense.

The mind is a part of physical reality and is subject to the same rules as everything else.

The mind is an imperfect instrument for measuring physical reality but that can be accounted for and quantified using the scientific method.

You have to have some way to 'know' what physical reality is in order to determine that you've described it accurately with words, and our "knowing" of physical reality is by definition limited and filtered through minds.

But we eliminate the effect of this subjective filter by basing all of our hard science on what maths and empirical data tell us rather than trusting our own instincts and perceptions.
