Is everyone supporting the train drivers?

Why should a company be bullied and threatened by strikers for doing what THEY thought was a right decision. What if the tribual had gone the other way. Would they have been justified in their withdrawal of labour potentially causing millions of pounds of loss for the company and disruption to thousands of flight passengers?

 

What business is it of those strikers to be taking action on behalf of a sole person's grievance.

 

There are two sides to everything.

 

Perhaps to make it fair why dont I concede the rights of strikers and their causes but if a company is found CORRECT by a tribunal they along with all the disrupted passengers/customers are allowed to recoup their own losses from the indivudal concerned, supportive strikers and the union invovled..... that sound balanced enough?

I trust airline pilots to know what safe practices are. Ditto train drivers. Some employers put safety before profit, as we find out repeatedly, so we need a way of countering those practices, whether you agree with that or not. Good employers don't lose lots of money through industrial disputes.

And he would prefer that this pilot got sacked than kept his job. I wonder what future he will have as a pilot now that he will be seen as a trouble maker by other airlines?

 

Edit: Turns out this pilot can stay at Thomas Cook, he was suspended and threatened with dismissal but not sacked, which is great for him and for passengers. But people do get sacked by employers for doing the right thing and winning an ET doesn't necessarily get you your job back.

If you were to suggest that shareholders removing their money from a company that pays lower dividends than another be banned then you might have a point.

 

Unfortunately, we live in a world where the coin of capital is worth more than the coin of labour.

 

And rightly so.

No , the militant , trouble causing unions are causing the strikes and disruption to peoples everyday lives .

They want to impose socialism by non-democratic means. What would you call them?

No: the government is causing the strikes by forcing Southern to introduce driver only operation (DOO). It is the Department for Transport's insistence that Southern cannot negotiate anything other than DOO that caused the train drivers to stop working rest days and overtime, creating the disruption seen before these strikes due to Southern not having enough drivers. Southern is operating the trains on a management contract rather than the usual franchise and has to do what the DfT says. Any stepping out of line could see the contract terminated.

 

It is interesting that a similar dispute between the unions and Scotrail over DOO was settled in the summer by the parties thrashing out a deal. The unions offered the same terms to Southern and were rebuffed, because Southern's hands are being held firmly behind their backs by the DfT who are trying to break the rail unions.

 

Anyone who thinks that the government are not behind all of this should read this report from February this year, where a senior civil servant in the DfT said some outrageous things and many several claims which were untrue. Anyone for a punch-up! The comments below the article are interesting as well.

I believe that in Liverpool, where a passenger was killed because she fell down the side of the train when it was at the platform, Liverpool trains could go on strike too.

The train guard got 5 years in jail, the train drivers will not have as good a view of the doors as the train guards, they will just have CCTV cameras.
