Last surviving dambuster not given a knighthood

Recommended Posts

The Government has just given out new year honours to deserving people and I am not saying they do not deserve them, but one person had his name put forward for a knighthood but was overlooked by government was 95 year old George Johnny the last surviving hero from the Dambusters.

After reading his story and the fear he endured during the raid on Nazi Germany to blow up the dams, I cannot believe he was not given a knighthood years ago. This knighthood would not be for just him, it would be for all those brave men who did not come back that night.

At the age of 95 can this brave man wait another year to have his name nominated again. Government should be ashamed if they do not make an exception and add his name to the honours list this year.

Agreed .

It seems we can give tennis players knighthoods , but not a brave hero who fought to protect this country.

Those who hand them out should be ashamed of themselves.

The Queen bestows them [hands them out.]

The Prime Minister recommends them [speaks to the Queen.].

Private individuals can put forward recommendations [write a letter.] As can the Foreign Secretary and Commonwealth Governments [only it gets delivered to her desk in Red Box that contains the day's business.]

Therefore, the chances of a private individual having a nomination accepted is marginal [ lottery winner, snowball in hell, struck by lightning.]

Clear now?

Whether an honour is to be given is decided by an independent committee. So the government has no say whatsoever if a person can get accepted or not.

Get it now as you were wrong.

Im pleased that he has been overlooked.

A great man like this should not be associated with most of the recipients on the trivial New Years Honours . Let him take pride in his war medals, and in his and his crews heroic actions, and leave the honours list to the B list nobodies.

He doesn't need to be on the honours list for us to appreciate what he did for us and his country.

Good post. I was going to post something similar. A threequarter naked young girl miming "pop" songs while cavorting round half naked men on stage seems to be a prime candidate for some kind of a New Year Honour in these enlightened times. It just goes to show they really mean very little these days.

It has just been on the news tonight that a petition to give G J Johnson a knighthood has been handed in to Downing St.

Johnson has just said on the news that it would not be just for him but for the men who lost their lives that night.

I hope he gets his wish, and Government gives him his knighthood.

I'm sure Squadron Leader Johnson, as a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Medal, has already been recognised by the military. He's also been presented with numerous medals outside of the RAF from people such as the Mayor of Bristol who he no doubt knew through his years of being Chairman of the local Conservative Party.

If anyone thinks this is some old guy in a nursing home without a penny to his name that hasn't had any recognition or influence in life due to his career, you are way off the mark.

..."Chairman of the local Conservative Party".

Good enough reason not to recognize his war effort's then for you and plenty on here no doubt!!
