El Cid
Yes. It makes them more reliable and cheaper. Also robots don't strike. Robots have a long way to go yet.
The Joker
Robots have a long way to go yet. especially if we have to import them; costs have risen considerably in the last six months. Can't think why though
Robin-H
Robots have a long way to go yet. Depends what you want to use them for. They already exists for ticketing (I very rarely get a ticket from an actual person). Driverless trains already exist (the DLR).
unbeliever
Robots have a long way to go yet. Not that far. Turns out you don't need to be sapient to drive a train and you certainly don't to sell a ticket. If the UK gets driverless cars (with no rails, switching and networked signalling to guide them) before driverless trains, that's messed up. Can't think why though still going to be cheaper than striking train drivers:roll: where do you get cost have risen considerably? maybe slightly with dollar price but not significantly. Such places will need to have ticket machines, or such machines might be placed on the trains. The situation you describe will be rather rare. It's the future you know. Obviously you wouldn't get rid of the ticket staff before you had a ticket machine (or two) installed.. My point is that ticket machines already exist. Not every station has them yet, although even the really small ones are getting them, but there is no reason that they can't be placed in every station right now. The technology is there. We already have driverless trains - the DLR is a prime example. The only thing stopping mainline trains from doing so is retrofitting the platforms. Bring it on I say - I'd love to see HS2/3 start driverless from day one.
