Merkel warns Trump against ' protectionism' policies

Recommended Posts

I think it was Boris that said this morning, we are going to get a free trade deal with the USA, but its NOT a free trade deal, they are are just going to be in talks about a trade deal, not free trade. MORE FAKE NEWS.

Tariffs for UK products going into the USA are currently around 3%, on £3.5 billion worth of products. Trump will not want to lose all that revenue.

It's not fake news it's a prediction by a well placed politician. He may be wrong. We got plenty of predictions in the referendum campaign which turned out to be wrong. The mistake was not making the prediction it was presenting it (mostly by others) as a fact.

This term "fake news" is being horribly abused. People merely need to distinguish clearly between honest predictions, dishonest predictions and statements of fact (true or false).

Are the USA discussing a free trade deal? Trump is calling it a 'fair' deal.

Call it what you want. It would be a deal, registered with the WTO, whereby we would be able to trade with the USA with greatly reduced trade barriers in both directions.

Not a 'free trade' deal then.

Free trade itself is an ideal used only for illustrative purposes. We don't have ideal free trade within the EU internal market.

A "free trade deal" is an arrangement which brings us closer to that pure ideal.

I hope it's a good deal (trump, surprisingly didn't specify) but the deals we've had with states have been very one sided in the past. Wasn't there one that ended 2003 (a sweetener so we'd go to iraq?) over steel or something?

Trump will be offering deals left and right. They'll be excellent for the USA. Everyone else? Not so sure.

Don't worry. We're used to that with the EU.

The ideal has no practical world usage. It's an ideal only in academic terms that in reality would fall apart because of human nature and the chaotic-ness of human economic activity. It is impossible for markets to operate with precision..
