Job hunting / job market

Recommended Posts

I am working at present, but that could change soon (my choice). Has I have been with the same employee for a long time, I have lost sight of the current job market. Fortunately i have got myself into a position where I don't have to chase the money.

I am currently in IT but don't necessarily want to continue with that. In fact I have an almost completely open mind barring sales.

Where do you go these days to get a job? Is it agencies first? Online sites? Is jobcentre still virtually useless?

Would it be a bad idea to leave a job these days? (even if for one reason or another you are not enjoying it anymore).

Most IT firms (such as the one I work for) exclusively use agencies and accept that paying commission is worth it against fielding candidates yourself.

It's not a bad idea to leave a job, you aren't going to be vilified in an interview for saying you left the previous role for something new unless you have a CV full of annual job changes which then raises alarm bells. No employer wants to spend time and effort making a new employee one of the team for them to bail after six months.

I have been with the same employer for 28 years and have done a number of roles for them, the latest being IT technician (5 years). I have also got external accreditation to go with the experience.

What I don't want to do is jump out of the frying pan into the fire, so to speak. I am really looking for a Mon - Fri job now, although i would be prepared to work outside those times on an occasional basis. I suspect that's not what most IT firms want?? but I am assuming that.

Most IT firms are 9-5 Monday to Friday unless they are support jobs. Developers for example don't work weekends.

IT in schools would be a good choice then. Salaries vary depending on level of experience. But you are guaranteed Monday to Friday, usually 8-4.

Never walk out of a job, until you have another to go too.

Good advice.

As to where to look, I'd start with online, cwjobs, jobsite, jobserve, etc...

I suspect that there are plenty of 9-5 IT Technician jobs available. After all who needs employee laptops fixing out of hours when the office is closed...

What exactly was your job as a technician though?

So you need ID, and proof of income and/or employment status... Most of what you list won't apply to most people at a guess.

Nothing like that, i wouldn't know how to fix a laptop. Bit more specialised, Oracle database on Enterprise linux, unix, solaris NOT windows. All in the firing line stuff too.

Okay, so are you actually a DBA?

Again, plenty of jobs that are 9-5, and probably plenty that also include some on-call rota.

You don't bring in proof for things you don't have though, like an overseas income or premium bonds or all the rest of it.

Plenty of work out there for experienced sysops.
