GOLDEN OLDIE
Can anyone remember Jap Desserts? My mother used to buy them from the bakers during the 1950s? They were the most delicious buns with chocolate vermacelli round the sides. Wonder what happened to them? Any bakers out there?

Although my dad used the term in a derogatory manner, regarding what he called "Monkey-metal", poor quality, soft metal that some cheapo tools were made from (Spanners/ grips and screwdrivers). If the tool was made of monkey metal, and split whilst in use, he'd say "Huh! Bleedin' jap-dessert!"
GOLDEN OLDIE
I remember the sweets but I am really anxious to find that I wasn't imagining those cakes from the 50s! They were soft and gooey with chocolate vermacelli all round them!! Am I suffering from an age thing?
DUFFEMS
The nearest thing I can think of in the form of a cake would be French Fancies which are nowadays made by Mr.Kipling?

GOLDEN OLDIE
In the 1950s my mum bought Jap Desserts cake at a local bakers in Shiregreen. Not to be confused with the sweets. Does anyone remember them? They had a fudgy centre and sprinkles of chocolate on top!
sheff_saying
Yes - I remember Jap cakes - we used to buy them from Spittlehouses bakery shop at Woodseats. Theirs were decorated with melted chocolate and chopped nuts and/or chocolate vermicelli. They were my Mum's favourite! I'm sure there were some commercially produced ones, but they were never as nice as ones from the local bakery. They're also known as Japonaise Fancies - there are some recipes on the internet and they are basically almond meringue.
