Billy Sugger
Does anyone remember The Old English Samson pub on the bottom corner of Duke Street? I think it fell victim to the kamikaze traffic island. It was a great Victorian style pub with very eccentric gents toilets.
theimposter
I have seen a fair few pictures of this pub but not heard about the toilets?! What made them eccentric?!
Billy Sugger
The gents were downstairs, circular floor area, quite large and with lots of space. The outer walls were W.Cs and the urinals formed a circle in the middle. The flushlng system for the urinals consisted of a large circular glass tank situated about eye level with lots of water in it. It also had several large goldfish in who seemed quite happy, the water level only dropped a few inches when it flushed. The other thing about the toilets was the fact that it's shape and high ceiling gave it superb accoustics, a local barber shop quartet used to practice in there (as well as a few drunks)
