Robin-H
You don't mind being murdered for your flesh as long as it's by a bolt through your head? I quite clearly said that given the choice I would rather be killed painlessly and quickly by a bolt through the head then suffer a long and painful death that most wild animals are unfortunate enough to suffer from. Hell, given the choice I would rather end my own life with a bolt through the head than suffer a long and painful illness.
Guest makapaka
It's horrible what they did but we can't just keep locking people up indefinitely as there would be no room for more serious offences. Having been named and shamed their reputations will also be irreparably damaged which is further punishment as well.

There's a fair chance we'll end up locking them up again after they've done something more abhorrent, possibly to a human.

sgtkate
Maybe so, hopefully not. Of course hopefully not, but evidence points strongly to a direct causal link between cruelty to animals and cruelty to humans. So crimes like this are serious and should be treated as such. Perpetrators should be put on a watch list perhaps similar to the sex offenders register, if the crime is deemed to be one of intent and not neglect. Source is the Huffington Post, so not the greatest, but apparently in America animal abuse does get you on an FBI watch list. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/fbi-animal-abuse-tracking_us_568fd1d9e4b0cad15e6468c8 "For the first time ever this year, the FBI will collect data on animal cruelty crimes via its National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS). In doing so, the bureau has classified animal cruelty as a Group A felony, on par with homicide, arson and assault."
