Before Castro took power, Cuba had the second highest GDP in Latin America. It now has one of the lowest. So the percentage of GDP criterion is a very poor indicator of the 'success' of Cuban health care.

Moreover, since there is no opposition or free press in Cuba, the Cuban government has the ability to manipulate, or even invent, financial statistics in any way it sees fit. You may remember that, when communism collapsed in Eastern Europe, the statistics relating to industrial output and other data were found to have been bogus, despite these statistics having been accepted in the West by various gullible people as proof of the superiority of the socialist system.

Before Castro took power, Cuba was ruled by American gangsters using the puppet Batista. Where do you think families like the Kennedy's made their fortunes?

What do you think The Bay of Pigs invasion was all about, Liberation? Dream on.

I am talking about the countries of the former Soviet Union and I have had a sample of their health care and if you do not have the money you are in big trouble because everyone has to pay for your prescriptions and their treatment,or wait a very long time to see someone. Also the state of the hospitals leave a lot to be desired.Having said that the health workers are usually very good. Our N.H.S. is far superior.

Okay. Some of that is accurate. Doesn't explain how Castro managed to impoverish the people of Cuba. Communism does.

You will find the people of Cuba were desperately impoverished under the regime of the American mafia.

When the gangsters were rounded up and thrown out, the USA imposed embargos and sanctions on them, which made life pretty desperate.

But at least they were not subject to the vile indignities impose upon them in order to be the playthings of rich Americans.

The words to 'Rum and Coca-Cola' have hidden meaning.

Yes. Your colourful language does not change reality. Castro made them poor.

You would rather mother and daughter worked for the yankee dollar, under the influence of rum and coca cola, instead of being a free people then?

Not pleasant for the people involved I think.

(the song mentions Trinidad, but the meaning is very clear)

The Castro regime has been in power for almost 60 years. As well as destroying Cuba's economy, it has also imposed its own brand of tyranny on the population, denying them the right to vote in free elections or even to freely express themselves. It is ludicrous to seek to defend this regime by referring to the sins of Batista or of US gangsters. The Cuban people deserve better.

Incidentally, the US embargo on Cuba had nothing to do with the ejection of US gangsters. Please check your history books.

No it didn't. Castro threw them out, then the embargo was enforced. I remember it well.

Well Castro stole the US oil refineries based in Cuba. You didn't expect them to just let that go did you?

Oh yes. Then they decided it was a good idea to host Soviet nukes.

What stops Cuba trading with everybody else?

Oh Yes. Their economy is a basket case.
