Sick Parcelforce couriers charged up to £250 if they can't find cover

Just signed an online petition on this.

 

Parcel force charge their workers £250 for each day they have off sick, to cover the cost of a replacement driver.

 

This is wrong- drivers are self employed and already lose a days earnings if they are too ill to work- £250 is more than the days earnings already lost.

Mate of mine is a self employed driver at Menzies who distribute papers and if he can't get cover for a night off he gets charged about 130 per night ,his only gets about 60 per night.thier excuse is they have to pay one of their drivers who in turn also has to use a company vehicle

This is wrong on so many levels.

 

However, when people apply to become S/E drivers they sign and agree to the terms and conditions.

 

The problem in this country lies in the fact that if you do employ people on a proper basis, contract, guaranteed hours pay etc. the rights of the employee are massively weighted against the company, it's a minefield esp, for small and micro businesses.

 

This is why big companies take the Micky.

 

Make it easier to employ people and companies like Parcelforce will have to behave better.

It is wrong, fully wrong- no justifications for it

 

I know what you are saying, but we can't have a world where every legal document signed is not enforceable.

 

In my opinion this comes in the unfair contract category, especially if there is an exclusivity clause.
