stephen 7
Does anyone remember going downstairs to buy singles and lp.s you went in to a booth resembling a phone box and put on a pair of headphones to listen to the single you wanted to buy
athy
The shop I remember in Chapel Walk was "Philip Cann - The Music Man", but I think that the records and listening booths were on the ground floor. Quite a few shops in the '60s had those listening booths - I think Wilson Peck's did too.

Quite a few shops in the '60s had those listening booths - I think Wilson Peck's did too. They were indeed. Spent a lot of time in those booths. Purportedly, they were to allow previewing a record before you bought it. But, many people, myself included, had no intention of buying it. Just wanted to listen to the song. Imagine something like that catching on nowadays?
fatrajah
As I remember it, when you reached the bottom of the stairs, there was a counter at the far end of the room with listening booths to the right & maybe to the left. I last went there in 1966 so I may have remembered wrongly.

bazjea
The Philp Canns record shop I remember was at the top of Dixon Lane in the 50s The listening Booths were down the stairs. It was still on Dixon Lane in the early 70s. I think Vallances bought them out and they moved to Chapel Walk Photo link below http://www.picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;v02880&pos=3&action=zoom&id=44142

I'm sure Cann's had one store on Chapel Walk in early 1962, as I bought some thing for school there.
