Mummers in the 20s?

My father is 95 and in the 1920s he lived at Balby Place, between Grimesthorpe and Meadowhall. He remembers a group of performers coming round to the yard, he says they were called something like "faily". Can anyone help with information, please?

Can't help with most of this except Balby Place (demolished circa 1969) was off Danville Street in Pitsmoor. It was near the old Burngreave school.
