Dannyno
To some extent there'll always be some self-deprecation about where you're from but you're right there's some folk on here chronic dislike of Sheffield must be making their lives very miserable. There's an array of different restaurants, pubs and bars that cater for all from real ale drinkers to late night revellers and some top quality theatres and music venues. Still, Doncaster's market is better apparently..... Well, Doncaster won an award for best food market a couple of years ago. But it isn't all open every day, which seems confusing. Pleased for Doncaster, I'm sure their market is grand, I'd just rather live in Sheffield personally. I was just making the point that some people seem to love focussing on what Sheffield hasn't got and how terrible it is rather than what it has got. It is but not as good as Barnsley and that is because they are both in the traditional Town centre environment( where they have always been) and not been moved down South so as to cosy up to out of Town investors and speculators. Cyclone
so you have seen people taking shopping bags into the cinema ? is there a baggage holding space in there ? I just tuck the bag under my seat, or most often I have an aisle seat and put the bag next to me. Edited May 4, 2017 by Cyclone

Guest makapaka
the poster was talking about Meadowhall . and why is it a daft point ? Cos justifying arguments on town planning around whether you can take bags in the pictures seems a bit daft. I thought they were talking about the Light so hands up there. Cyclone
Agreed, it does seem to be a an odd point to make in the first place.
sgtkate
so you have seen people taking shopping bags into the cinema ? is there a baggage holding space in there ? I've never actually been into that cinema to see a film, but I can't imagine what else the people queuing up to buy tickets and popcorn whilst holding shopping bags are going to do except go to the cinema... But makapaka and others are right, it's a moot argument and discussion line. I really think SCC should support, financially if needs be, a trial of late night opening of shops around the Light cinema and perhaps others if footfall can be assessed. Do it for 3 months with loads of advertising and see what happens. If it works, then yay, if not the businesses can partly claim back their costs. Having the costs partly covered would be a huge incentive for them to give it a go with lower risk. Edited May 4, 2017 by sgtkate

It a very normal thing in America for people to do some shopping, have some lunch and 'catch a movie'. Its also very normal for people to go to the cinema during the day on their own. Makes sense really.
max
Interesting that Sheffield city centre is very popular for visitors, the Hotels are nearly full every weekend, the bars restaurants and cafes are very busy, the theatres and live music venues are well supported, Leopold Square, Devonshire Green, Tudor Square and the peace gardens are buzzing when the weather is nice.....and yet some Sheffield folk on here think it is a dump and haven't visited for ages. It's the extortionate price of parking that stops people enjoying themselves in the town centre. Imagine going out for the night with friends, where you'd expect to spend upwards of £100, then crying off at the last moment because you're expected to pay £2 to park for the evening. Or, if not on a night out, you're going Christmas shopping but baulk at paying £2.40 for 2 hours parking so end up going to Poundland at Meadowhall. So they sit in their vests in front of their computers instead and whinge endlessly about the price of parking.
