Whitby magpie Cafe on fire

Recommended Posts

At least the chips might be crispier. Last time I went there they were floppy anaemic stodge, despite them being world renowned … seagull fodder as it transpired (fish was excellent though!)

On fire 2 days in a row?

Has it been bought out by the former owners of Sheffield Ski Village?

or gatecrasher, lol

Yeah … the one across the road (name eludes me) does great chips. We only queued at the Magpie to see why it was so famous. :)

oh yeah found out after i posted this that it caught fire again today, not good

Maybe they were working that fast they set themselves on fire. The last time we sat in there to eat it was like a fast food place, they wanted you in and they wanted you out pronto, they needed the table sharpish. Never again very over rated. We've had much tastier fish and chips in Whitby.

I was in Whitby a couple of weekends ago, and part of our unwritten agenda was to go to the Magpie and have the fabled fish and chips. We arrived early, and the place didn't open until eleven. We passed by there at around 10:30am and there was already a queue to get in. I've got an aversion to queuing for 'anything' ...So we gave it a miss.

However, in passing I did notice an unprecedented amount of cardboard boxes and general rubbish stashed in and around the ground floor, which I did think at the time was a bit of a hazard, both in terms of hygiene, and potential fire hazard. (Just one of those things you privately think while wandering along).

From seeing pictures on the news, it seemed the fire was on the upper floors, so may be entirely unconnected.
