apelike
What software is it that you think they use? Most use custom Windows software, POS I believe also uses custom Windows software, Wilko and other stores such as ASDA use custom Windows software. Windows is the most widely used software for businesses so unless someone writes similar software that can be used for Linux its a no-go area. tzijlstra
Where are all the leftie-posters who glamorised these types of spammers when they attack things that they dislike, like racists? That is such a thick comment...
Phanerothyme
Where are all the leftie-posters who glamorised these types of spammers when they attack things that they dislike, like racists? Er - this particular bit of ransomware is basically software developed by the US Authorities, and the NSA in particular. It was probably launched by one bloke. This is probably a demo, to get some sales of the ransomware tool - which are likely to be much more lucrative. Luckily the NSA also left the plans of a cypher-cracking supercomputer on the open internet, so anyone with a spanner and a few squillion dollars can easily decrypt their own hard drives and avoid paying the ransom. On the other hand, Bitcoin payments are eminently traceable. Just ask, you know, the NSA!

Alcoblog
Didn't the NHS waste around ten billion quid a few years back, on an aborted system? You'd have thought that the least they could've done was to make the original un-hackable. Is this difficult to do or something (not knowing anything whatsoever about computer systems)
muddycoffee
Didn't the NHS waste around ten billion quid a few years back, on an aborted system? You'd have thought that the least they could've done was to make the original un-hackable. Is this difficult to do or something (not knowing anything whatsoever about computer systems) It wasn't wasted. The system is now up and running in the majority of UK hospitals for connecting patient data and records. The issue of "waste" was at the time, government interfering with a large computer project that was approaching the final stages of being ready. If you mess about and try to repurpose a large project like that it is like starting from scratch. here is the original project https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NHS_Connecting_for_Health Now called "Lorenzo patient record systems" it is fully up and working. ---------- Post added 13-05-2017 at 12:21 ---------- Part of the NHS problem might be because some trusts are still running Xp https://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/12/08/windows_xp_nhs_still/ that information is out of date, even the FOI request it cites was not recent. I think you will find that most large NHS trusts don't have Windows XP on any networked systems any longer. I know some NHS trusts have a project running to dump windows 7 soon because that is out of date now and they are preparing to move onto a corporate version of Windows 10 in the near future. ---------- Post added 13-05-2017 at 12:33 ---------- whatever happens. What we really want to know is where is Jeremy Hunt? He should be speaking to the media constantly about this, but as he's witnessed the embarrassing performance of Amber Rudd who does not know what she is talking about he probably thinks he'll do even worse. They both need to be replaced with people who are capable of understanding these issues.
