We moved out as we didn't like what is happening in the city and in general the north of England, when I retired moving to the West Country.

I always think when I cross back into the west country over the M5 Avon Bridge at Avonmouth I'm back in England. 50yrs behind the times. We walk up into the village Sunday morning for a paper and the congregation are singing in the church, the lady in the local newsagents has time for a chat with you. If we hear a emergency services siren its the talk of the village the next day. The local pharmacist and his wife have Sunday Lunch in the Ship Inn, everyone you meet has a good morning for you ... the village society put on excellent plays and look after their vulnerable community members, no, I've not dreamed this ... we actually live it! Best thing I ever did leaving Sheffield and I'd never return.

Don't get me wrong, we have our low lifes down here, but they don't form the majority.

I realise that the situation up north will eventually work its way down here, but thankfully I'll be long gone and won't be here to see it.

Yeah but sorry to burst your bubble but that is not Scotland Street 100 years ago. The UK has been majority urbanised for a long time and what you describe is absolutely not the norm. The people you describe as lowlifes are a manifestation of rampant and well documented rural poverty.

That said even going back 30-40 years the UK was a very different place. In every town pubs and clubs the centre of social life. Local sports leagues aplenty - football, darts, snooker, pool, bowls, bar billiards, cribbage etc... etc... The whole lot.

Now who was it that smashed up communities and told us there was no such thing as society?

I presume you mean that Mrs Thatcher smashed up the communities ... in reality where I live is a Conservative stronghold and long may it remain that way, I dread to think what a socialist council would do to our community, I've seen what happened in Sheffield. Our local pubs are not owned by pubco's and they are, along with the church the hub of the community.

The only thing I miss about Yorkshire are the fishcakes!

Sweeping generalisations comparing unnamed south-western villages with Sheffield city.

The description of village life sounds very similar to Derbyshire, Yorkshire and Northumberland villages. Further up north Newcastle came top of this poll, so there's more to it than north and south. It will depend far more on exactly where you live within the city or county, where you work, and what your leisure pursuits require.

it sounds like your comparing a small West Country village with one of the biggest cities in the UK.

Do you really think that is a realistic comparison?

You also assume that your personal taste in living on the set of Heartbeat is superior to living in a large city with all that has to offer.

As my partner is retired and I run a business we have had the discussion about where we would like to live as now we could move anywhere. We have both lived abroad and in other UK cities and we have decided to stay in Sheffield. Why? Leafy suburbs, safe City, great regional theatre, small City centre, good healthcare, The Showroom, diverse restaurants, good friends, the Peak District almost in our back garden, and the buzz that the two Universities bring. I wonder why the moaners that live her don't move. I also wonder why the moaners who have moved are spending their time on this forum.
