No, the road markings are there to see. When the road splits from 2 lanes into 3, the left hand lane is marked as M1N. So as you enter this lane you are entering a lane that makes no mention of Rotherham etc. Only after approx 40m does the late then include R'HAM. Once you enter the roundabout the road layout is clear you are to enter the M1. Irrespective of the previous markings directions.

 

Just because the road markings are incorrect, this does not mean you can ignore the highway code and cross lanes in such an aggressive manner. You have to check it is safe to cross a lane before the maneuver. The white car driver did not and this is why they are at fault.

I've driven it plenty, the markings on the roundabout clearly show the black car stayed in their lane and the white car cut across.

 

It was the black cars lane, not the white cars lane, there is no question of that.

So where exactly should the white car go then? If in the right lane on the approach to the roundabout and then suddenly has to turn left even though the road markings say straight on towards Magna?

 

If you drive this every day like me then you will also know that all cars do what the white car has done. The black car should've stayed in the centre lane which after the Magna turn moves across into the left lane on the roundabout to allow the correct exit for Bawtry and then the M1S.

This is why it's catch 22 but thankfully accidents like this are quite rare at this location as generally people know middle lane is just for A631 Bawtry and M1S.

 

It does need addressing as the lane markings at both lanes are contradictory.

Ultimately all a roundabout is is a short one way road that connects back onto itself. If it has traffic lights on it or on the junctions entering it that doesn't change the nature of it.

It would have taken them the wrong way, but they can turn around.

 

Crucially they would have not crossed into another lane and hit other traffic.

 

The accident occurred in another lane, they had to leave their lane to cause that accident.

Watching the video you'll notice the Black car never leaves it's assigned lane at any point.

So where do you think the black car was heading for?

 

Looking at the footage closely it looks like he was trying to turn left onto the viaduct and probably got confused between M1N and M1S
