Vaati
Ok guys, you've had your fun, now it's starting to get insulting towards the people who live in the area. It has a proper name, it is to be used and the fun poking is to stop.
MediumDave
;-) Sounds like a type of Roman (or very early) paved road: https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=uqBfAAAAcAAJ&pg=PA84&lpg=PA84&dq=%22eight+foot+way%22&source=bl&ots=98QGo1TOMq&sig=N0CqQgTaxrmpIU6eArkS-Nk-RgI&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwih0sCx2I3WAhUEG5oKHfGBBbEQ6AEIXzAN#v=onepage&q=%22eight%20foot%20way%22&f=false Maybe the old Halifax road was one of these 'eight-foot ways'? Makes you wonder what happened when two carriages met each other... Apparently it was a local name for the 'ginnels' between streets, taken from fairly mundane architect's description: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firth_Park_(ward)#Parson_Cross (scroll to the bottom) Shame there's no citation for it but there you go... By the way it is stretching a point to call it Parson Cross considering the even-numbered side of Halifax Road is actually in S6, and it is bordered only by Chaucer School's playing fields. It's as much Wadsley Bridge/ Foxhill really...

The Gennils on these estates were originally surfaced with 3foot x 2foot precast concrete flags, laid 4 course wide. 4 courses of flags equals 8 foot, hence the name... ...strange name for a pub tho'
esme
Mod Note My bit of banter has been deleted from this thread!! everyone else's gets to stay. That seems a tad unfair. I just reviewed this thread, none of your posts have been removed from it, would you care to come to the Helpdesk & explain why you think making false accusations against the Moderators is appropriate ? actionman
An eight foot is another name for a gennel which we used that name as kids. Very handy to have this on my doorstep in parson cross. The're currently building a few hundred new houses in the area. A lot of social housing but also all private on the very large remmington rd site. Be good for the area
Guest
Mod Note I just reviewed this thread, none of your posts have been removed from it, would you care to come to the Helpdesk & explain why you think making false accusations against the Moderators is appropriate ? I responded to this earlier and that got deleted. I'll repeat. When I posted yesterday I must have been a bit lax and not pressed to submit reply button properly and didn't notice, causing me to think that my post had been deleted.
