The Consequences of Brexit [part 4]

As a matter of interest if you feel able to tell me what field of work is that in?

Non destructive evaluation (NDE). That’s what we call it, but it is probably more widely known as non destructive testing (NDT).

Sounds interesting, just googled it, the pictures looked sort of similar to the test room at my last place, near the end i did move into that area using the big bare board test machines to find shorts and track breaks on circuits. Although i didnt get to start learning the assembly test side of it, actually putting power through and stuff.

So all the old ex pat retirees there don't get free health care in Spain?

I think they do

"Anyone who is in receipt of a UK state pension, long-term incapacity benefit or bereavement benefit will be eligible for the same medical treatment as a local. In order to register for this, you need to obtain an S1 form from the International Pension Centre (IPC) in Newcastle. This needs to be filled in and presented, along with your Registration Certificate (Certificado de registro) and your local resident certificate (Certificado de Empadronamiento), and passport to your local INSS office. They will issue you with an accreditation to take to your local health centre."

Funny you should mention that. Where I work, our team have 8 vacancies and we are currently 26 strong. We can ONLY recruit British nationals. The vacancies have stood for 2 years. We can't find anyone to fill them and the new starters salary generally hit £50k in the first year. They don't need to be particularly experienced in the field of work we do as we'll end up spending about £10k training each new starter.

So you tell me we don't have a problem.

Shame I am 68, I would have been down in the morning offering my services. New starters on 50k, it must be a spoof post surely.

It really does sound unlikely that a job in NDT paying this amount would struggle to fill vacancies.

Perhaps ez8004 would give details of where the jobs are advertised and as much detail as he is able to give.

The vacancies are still being advertised.

Not going to reveal it directly for obvious reasons. The application and industry of the NDT application is what commands the high salaries as it is exceptionally specialised. On paper the ridiculous thing is that we have senior engineers who are "only" qualified to PCN Level 2 getting payed £100k+. Now that tells you a few things, the PCN qualification isn't actually that important other than a box ticking exercise and the exact nature of work that we do is what is appreciated. We could all be Level 3s if we wanted to for example.

I could easily wager that we are arguably a team of one of the most qualified NDE engineers in the country. There are only a handful of other groups who I'll say are equivalent to us. Doing pulse-echo UT inspection on a rolled bar in a steelworks isn't going to cut it, by any stretch of the imagination.
