pattricia
My sister lives in Cambridge and I'm in Sheffield . Is there a train station where we can meet half way without either of us changing trains ? We can then have lunch in the town and pop back on our trains afterwards. sgtkate
Leicester? If you put Sheffield to Cambridge into National Rail it offers a journey with a change at Leicester, which is just over an hour from Sheffield and a bit under 2 hours form Cambridge so your sister would have the longer journey. Quite a long round trip for lunch! Or if you were willing to change at Doncaster, you could meet at Peterborough for lunch. 50 mins from Cambridge and 50 mins from Donny. Peterborough has a direct service from Sheffield and Cambridge as does: Leicester Birmingham, furthest for both. London, nearly as quick. Ely, well worth your nearly 3 hour journey. Leicester is not the recommended changing point for journeys from Cambridge to Sheffield as it takes the longest time and is often the most expensive. Like London though it is often the most comfortable. There is a peculiarity when travelling from Sheffield to Cambridge in that the hourly direct route via Nottingham and Peterborough and changing at Ely is often not shown as it takes a few minutes longer than via Doncaster and changing at Peterborough or Stevenage. When booking on-line check the GO VIA box to include Nottingham. The Trainline site is always the most expensive while Virgin East Coast and East Midlands have special offers. The cheapest fares are also on the Sheffield Peterborough route. Avoid Saturdays and Sundays.
