Flyer out old occupation

Recommended Posts

Anyone know what occupation a Flyer out was? We've been discussing this on another website. The person was involved in the scissor trade as their next job but don't know if that was connected.

Are you sure it wasnt a "FILER OUT" ?

I would have said that as well Lazarus. The filers were a very special kind of people who worked on narrow grinding wheels, and filed out the prongs on forks.

I am not sure what they would have done with regards to scissors though.

Would they have filed out the burrs on the inside of the handles?

Or would scissors have been made by a cutlery company anyway, so filing forks may have been his job?

The fash inside of the bows would have been minimal, provided that the tool setter had done his job properly, and what little bit there was would be removed by rumbling the scissors prior to the blade being clipped out.

Scissors are classed as cutlery, but as was said before it is most likely that it was filing on fork prongs.
