John_S6 Posted August 28, 2018 Share Posted August 28, 2018 So Amey in their wisdom [/sarcasm] have decided to do the resurfacing of the shoddy resurfacing work on Walkley Lane and Ripley Street for the whole of this week - during the day! Absolutely no sense in this and they're reopening it at night 7pm-7am, surely it's far more logical to do this the other way round and work overnight to minimise disruption, as they did the first time they attempted it? Doing it and closing it in the day means not only no 52 bus to Hillsborough and Wisewood residents, but also major problems for residents in the vicinity. If the whole of Walkley Lane (up to the junction with Walkley Road near the Florist) and Ripley Street are closed at the same time as they seemed to be this morning it means that residents of at least 12 roads (Kirkstone, Bowness, Lonsdale, Bessingby, Carnaby, Speeton, Singleton x3, Trickett, top part of Hammerton Rd and Hammerton Close), not to mention emergency services, are unable to come or go by car from 7am-7pm (assuming that those bollards are still dividing Hammerton Road, I haven't been down there for a while). Plus those of us who live on one of the streets off the bottom of Walkley Lane are able to get up to Crookes via a large detour around Malin Bridge but because of the one way streets at the bottom we aren't actually able to return home in our cars after work! Before the 52a was extended to Wisewood there used to be the S6a and S6a buses from Hillsborough and the 14 bus from town to Wisewood and Loxley. They were all taken off. Point being, the way Amey is doing it is causing needless and avoidable disruption for a large number of residents. They don't need to close off the whole stretch of road for the week as they are doing. They could do the Ripley Street to Walkley Lane section one day and keep the rest open - minimal disruption and residents have access to alternate routes. Then the next section up - minimal disruption. Then the next - minimal disruption. Or do the work overnight as they did initially - no disruption at all during peak times. But by closing the whole stretch for the week they're preventing everyone on the 12 roads above from using their cars for the whole time during the day. Given the project has been going for several years already it's far more likely that most people will have already had the resurfacing work done by them so have first hand experience of the disruptions.
