Woodburn Road School

Recommended Posts

Hello Footie Freak (again). Hope you got my PM. The bloke was called Sanderson. I left the same year as Mr Sims, and we were told we would be welcome back any time. However, when a bunch of us from Waltheof turned up, he had us escorted off the premises! So much for a warm welcome.

Got your pm! SF is better than friends re-united! Ta! I will be replying soon! - Oh yeah, that's him, Sanderson. Brilliant, cheers. I always found him lovely, though for some reason he took a bit of a shine to me (in a good way, not a dodgy one!) though I used to be so embarrassed cause he always called me 'Carol!' - apparently, he used to teach someone called Carol **** (same surname as me) so I had to be stuck with the name as well - of course the rest of the kids found it hilarious! Very embarrassing to a ten year old!

Hi every one. I also went to Woodbourn Road School, but left in 1957 so am a bit older than most of you. We lived on Woobourn Road No 93 next to the Chapel. It was a great school, and I have many happy memories. Any one out there my age?

Hi Whiteley,

Thanks for reply. I know the name of your brother, but I can't put a face to him. I am 60 so we were probably in the same class. A girl in my class lived on Cottingham Street, her name was Rene Denial.

I know the Denials well, Rene went to live in Australia but unfortunately died in a car accident out there years ago, there was Alf and Dennis Denial as well. Do you remember any of the following names, Gordon Davison, Dennis Fletcher, Glyn Williams they were all in the same year as Dennis.

Hi Whiteley,

Yes I know the names, but am lost about faces for them. I know Rene died in Australia, and it came as quite a shock. My sister Sheila was in the same class as Alf, so she will know more about him. Rene beat me in the final of a table tennis tournament once. She was always came first in all the exams, she was a lovely girl.

Remember most of these names....a few more to add:- Beverley Needham, Anne Worthington,Lori Gray, Elizabeth Caterer, Wendy, Debbie and Cheryl Shaw,Darryl and Francine Dagnall, Tony Hadi,Lesley and Cathy May,Lorraine and David Twelvetrees,Paul and Mark Straw, Anthony and Daisy Hayles etc etc !!

We lived on Westbury Street until 1981. I remember all of these names (sorry I'm a bit late with this thread but I've just joined).

Anybody remember Andrew Oxborough, Terry, Dean and Donna Parker, Michael and Paul Reynolds, Andrew Fletcher, Shokat Nawaz, Tahir Khan, Zaid Hussain, Barry Cooke, Andrew Kemp, Georgie Ward, Wayne Kania, Noel, Parick and Sonia Palmer, Paul Dyson, Kerry, Nicky and Craig Davison, John, Joanne and Andrea Parker, Mandy Pilling, Angela, John and Micheal Haynes, Steven Burnand and Kevin Pollard?

Phew, need a lie down after that lot.

I went to Hammerton and Woodbourne. Can't believe nobody's mentioned the best teacher of all time, Malcolm Hannah (he played the pianner). Somebody must remember him. I was in saturn as well, and yes we did always lose. As well as the school song (which sadly I remember all the verses to), Saturn had our own song, written by Rita Anyon. We were great at singing, but always got leathered at football.

I remember Malcolm Hannah extremely well, although not from a pupil's point of view. I spent three years with him when we were both mature students at Teacher Training College.

As has already been said, he was a lovely man. Very wise in many ways and also very musical. He not only played the piano, but also the violin to a very high standard and also the alto sax. I seem to remember that he'd been a semi-professional musician in his time playing for shows and dancing. I was also a player in an orchestra that he conducted and spent many happy hours playing under his direction. I learnt a lot about music from him.

I lost touch with him many years ago and often wonder if he is still with us,

Does anybody know?

I typed in my old address 157 Cottingham Street, followed the white rabbit to here, and saw some names from my distant past including my own JOHN PARKER. Andrew Oxborough had a brother David (snotty nose) Andrew Fletcher had a sister Penny, Mark Krump I think lived on Broad Oaks he was best mates with Kevin Pollard. Did you know Donna,Tina and Graig lowe they lived next door to John and Angela Haynes. What about Paul Barker or Steven Martin? or perhaps Graham, Susan and Karen Pemberton their half sister was Anne Worthington. I would like to know who you could be? Some teahers I remember Mrs Ring (who went blind a few years after I left to go to Waltheof). Mrs Anyon the onion? I remember Mr Hannah Mrs Howarth, Mr Simms was the head during my time there. reveal yourself.
